Non-native three-dimensional block copolymer morphologies

Self-assembly is a powerful paradigm, wherein molecules spontaneously form ordered phases exhibiting well-defined nanoscale periodicity and shapes. However, the inherent energy-minimization aspect of self-assembly yields a very limited set of morphologies, such as lamellae or hexagonally packed cylinders. Here, we show how soft self-assembling materials-block copolymer thin films-can be manipul...

Nanoparticle surfactants as a route to bicontinuous block copolymer morphologies.

The surface chemistry of nanoparticles can be modified so that these particles behave like surfactants and localize at interfaces between two fluids. We demonstrate that small volume fractions phi(P) of such surfactant nanoparticles added to lamellar diblock copolymers lead initially to a decrease in lamellar thickness with phi(P), a consequence of decreasing interfacial tension, up to a critic...

Rectangular symmetry morphologies in a topographically templated block copolymer.

Using an array of majority-block-functionalized posts makes it possible to locally control the self-assembly of a block copolymer and achieve several morphologies on a single substrate. A template consisting of a square symmetry array of posts produces a square-symmetry lattice of microdomains, which doubles the areal density of features.

Selective directed self-assembly of coexisting morphologies using block copolymer blends

Directed self-assembly (DSA) of block copolymers is an emergent technique for nano-lithography, but is limited in the range of structures possible in a single fabrication step. Here we expand on traditional DSA chemical patterning. A blend of lamellar- and cylinder-forming block copolymers assembles on specially designed surface chemical line gratings, leading to the simultaneous formation of c...

Directed self-assembly of solvent-vapor-induced non-bulk block copolymer morphologies on nanopatterned substrates.

We report a study on directed self-assembly (DSA) with solvent annealing to induce the formation of non-bulk block copolymer microdomains on chemical patterns. Ultrathin films of symmetric polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) display morphologies of PMMA dots, stripes, and PS hexagons with increasing exposure time to acetone vapor, a PMMA-selective solvent. All three nanostru...
